Despite the victory, the Spanish keeper was at fault for Fulham's first goal and could have done better for the second.
Pundits and fans criticise Sanchez
Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher were scathing in their criticism, and their views were echoed by a vast majority of Chelsea supporters online. However, the pile-on was somewhat over the top, as the defending for Gonzalo Garcia's goal was shoddy all around.
Yet these opening-day lapses, combined with a sprinkling of mistakes last season, highlight a persistent issue. With no European football to clog up the calendar and a reshaped, balanced squad under a high-calibre manager, Chelsea should be title contenders, but that will be tougher if Sanchez remains first choice.
Sanchez's credentials questioned
Sanchez, 28, has only three caps for Spain and did not make the squad for the World Cup. Chelsea are well blessed with keepers, but the numbers tell their own story.
Xabi Alonso has a duty of care to a player facing fierce personal criticism, but managers must be ruthless to succeed at the highest level, particularly with goalkeepers. Mikel Arteta's replacement of Aaron Ramsdale with David Raya at the start of the 2023/24 season is a prime example. Ramsdale had just signed a new long-term contract and been named in the PFA Team of the Year, yet Arteta's decision paid dividends.
History of ruthless keeper changes
Pep Guardiola told Joe Hart in the summer of 2016 that he would not be Manchester City's goalkeeping future. At the time, Hart had two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, two League Cups and 63 England caps; he won only 12 more caps after the decision.
Alex Ferguson dropped Jim Leighton for the 1990 FA Cup final replay against Crystal Palace, playing Les Sealey instead. United won 1-0, giving Ferguson his first trophy as manager.
Transfer window options
Chelsea began the campaign without a new goalkeeping option despite their positive attitude towards the transfer market. When James Trafford's departure from Manchester City became clear, Chelsea should have been in the mix.
Clubs are now aware of Chelsea's needs and will demand top dollar, but options exist. Diogo Costa has a £51 million release clause in his Porto contract, and Borussia Dortmund might be tempted to cash in on Gregor Kobel.
After only one game of the Premier League season, it is harsh on Sanchez, who still has a good career ahead of him. But whoever Chelsea decide to pursue, they must do so before the transfer window closes, otherwise an unlikely title challenge becomes very unlikely.
