Sabalenka's Madrid Open Defence Ends in Shock Defeat

Aryna Sabalenka's defence of her Madrid Open title came to a shocking end in the quarter-finals, as American Hailey Baptiste saved six match points to secure a stunning victory. The 30th seed triumphed 2-6 6-2 7-6(8-6) in a match lasting just over two and a half hours, handing the world No. 1 only her second defeat of the season.

Baptiste's Career-Defining Win

Baptiste, 24, described the victory as the biggest of her career, marking her first win over a top-five player. She had lost to Sabalenka in their only previous meeting at the Miami Open quarter-finals last month. Reflecting on the match, Baptiste said: "I played her a few weeks ago and it was a close match. I had a better idea of how to play her and adjustments I needed to make. It was an uncomfortable situation for her, me serving and volleying, hitting a drop shot in one of the match points. It's not the easiest position to put her in, which is the plan."

Sabalenka's Winning Streak Halted

The defeat brought an end to Sabalenka's 15-match winning streak. The Belarusian had cruised through the first set, but a series of double faults in the second set allowed Baptiste to gain momentum. Sabalenka saved a break point and broke back, but Baptiste remained relentless, firing forehand winners to break again and force a decider. The third set was a rollercoaster, with Sabalenka breaking for 5-4, only for Baptiste to save five match points in a marathon service game. She ultimately broke the top seed again, but Sabalenka forced a tie-break. Despite holding a sixth match point at 6-5, Baptiste won three consecutive points to seal the biggest shock of the tournament.

Baptiste's Next Challenge

Baptiste will face world No. 8 Mirra Andreeva in her first WTA 1000 semi-final. The Russian defeated Baptiste in their only previous encounter at Wimbledon last season. "Somebody else that I played before and lost to," Baptiste said. "A little bit of a revenge tour, I guess. I'm looking to go out there and play my game again and get another win."

Sabalenka's Reaction

Sabalenka acknowledged Baptiste's improved performance in her post-match press conference: "I feel like in Miami I didn't give her many opportunities. She couldn't break my serve. Here, the first game, second set, I just double-faulted twice out of nowhere. It felt like that gave her belief. After that, she just started playing more aggressively. She was playing brave tennis. What can I say? Well done."

This marks the first time Sabalenka has lost from match points up since the thrilling 2024 Madrid final, where Iga Swiatek emerged victorious. Baptiste's remarkable composure under pressure has propelled her into the semi-finals, where she will aim to continue her giant-killing run.
