Russo double puts Arsenal ahead at Liverpool in WSL clash

Arsenal took a 2-1 lead into half-time against Liverpool in the Women's Super League at Anfield, with Alessia Russo scoring twice. Beata Olsson had equalised for the hosts after an early Arsenal opener.

Fast start for Arsenal

Russo broke the deadlock in the eighth minute, drilling a low cross from Emily Fox into the bottom-left corner from the penalty spot. The striker, starting in the No10 position, took her chance with a first-time finish after Arsenal had piled on early pressure.

Liverpool responded in the 15th minute when Olsson levelled, easing past Leah Williamson before slotting into the bottom-left corner. A Liverpool goal from Jenna Clark was later disallowed, with Endemann deemed offside.

Russo strikes again before the break

Russo restored Arsenal's lead in the 45th minute, heading a Baum cross into the bottom-left corner. The goal came at a good time for the Gunners, who led at the interval following an action-packed first half.

Before kick-off, both teams observed a period of silence for Remembrance Sunday. Manchester City returned to the top of the WSL table yesterday with a 5-0 win over West Ham, while Chelsea dropped points against Everton.

Liverpool entered the match without a league win since September 27, following a 4-1 loss to West Ham. Arsenal, in eighth, had drawn 1-1 with Aston Villa after two successive wins against Tottenham and Benfica, with manager Renée Slegers under increasing pressure.
