George Russell narrowly beat Max Verstappen to victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, with just 0.1 seconds separating the pair after a late-race duel.
Russell, who had been fastest in practice and qualifying, led from the start and built an advantage of more than 11 seconds. That cushion was wiped out when Alex Albon crashed his Williams into the barrier, prompting a safety car.
When racing resumed, Verstappen, on soft tyres, passed Oscar Piastri to close onto the Mercedes' gearbox, putting immediate pressure on Russell.
Third win of the season
Despite the Dutchman's sustained pressure, Russell held on to secure his third Grand Prix win of the season and his first since Austria in June. It was also the first time he has won a race after leading from start to finish.
The result stopped the points haemorrhage to championship leader Kimi Antonelli, which had occurred at every race since Silverstone. Russell cut the advantage from 81 to 66 points.
Drama behind the leader
Antonelli recovered to fifth after breaking his front suspension in qualifying and struggling to make early progress from 16th on the grid.
Piastri had held off Verstappen for much of the afternoon but was powerless at the safety car restart on slower medium tyres that took too long to warm up. He then locked up and ran off at turn one after a second safety car, dropping well out of the points.
McLaren's misery was compounded when Lando Norris was taken out in an incident involving both Alpines, with all three cars retiring while running in the points.
