Rugby league legend John Kear has died suddenly at the age of 71, just hours after commentating on the Challenge Cup final for the BBC. The iconic former coach passed away on Sunday afternoon while returning north from Wembley.
Kear enjoyed a distinguished coaching career spanning more than 700 matches and nine clubs. He is best remembered for masterminding two of the greatest shocks in Challenge Cup history: Sheffield Eagles' victory over Wigan in 1998 and Hull FC's triumph over Leeds Rhinos in 2005.
He also coached England at the 2000 Rugby League World Cup, leading them to the semi-finals, and had stints in charge of France, Wales, and Great Britain Academy. His playing career saw him make over 100 appearances for Castleford Tigers as an outside back.
The Rugby Football League paid tribute, stating: 'Kear, who was 71, was loved and admired throughout the sport and well beyond, having become a popular and respected broadcaster with the BBC.' Wakefield Trinity and Hull FC also expressed their condolences.
