Roy Keane's mother, Marie, has died peacefully at Marymount Hospice surrounded by her loved ones, her family has confirmed. A notice on RIP.ie announced the news on Friday, stating she will be 'sadly missed by her loving family, sisters Ina, Annette and Josephine, brothers Jack, Leo, Michael and Noel, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law Linda, Theresa and Mary, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, her great neighbours and friends.'
The former Manchester United captain was known to be close to his mother and often travelled home to Cork to see her. He once shared a photograph of the two of them on a visit, joking that she was 'the only boss he'd listen to.' Last year, during an episode of the Stick to Football podcast, Keane became emotional when he came across a picture of his parents while going through mementos from his playing career.
Rockmount AFC, the schoolboy club Keane played for as a youngster in Cork, were among the first to offer their condolences. They said: 'Sincere condolences to extended Keane and Lynch family on the passing of Marie.'
