Roy Keane has been appointed as assistant manager at Nottingham Forest, reuniting with Martin O'Neill at the Championship club. The former Republic of Ireland assistant expressed his enthusiasm for the challenge, stating, 'We will give it a good go, I have huge respect for Martin and the club.'
Keane, who made over 100 appearances for Forest as a player after moving from Ireland in 1990, returns to the City Ground where he began his English career under Brian Clough. He watched Forest's 3-1 win over Wigan on Saturday and said the deal came together quickly afterward.
'I am happy to be back. I know the manager, he came in a few weeks ago and things moved pretty quickly over the weekend. It is nice to get the deal done and get involved this morning with the first session,' Keane told the Forest website.
The 47-year-old has previously managed Sunderland and Ipswich, winning promotion with the Black Cats. He and O'Neill aim to revive Forest's promotion push, with Keane noting, 'There are a lot of big clubs in the Championship fighting to get out of it.'
'I have seen the team a number of times over the last year or two and it is going to be tough but hopefully, with one or two signings, a bit of luck, we can hopefully be competing,' he added.
