Rory McIlroy has opened up about how he secured his unexpected cameo in The Devil Wears Prada 2, revealing that his wife Erica Stoll eagerly joined him on screen. The back-to-back Masters champion surprised audiences by appearing in the highly anticipated sequel, which stars Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci.
A 15-Second Appearance
The couple appears for approximately 10 to 15 seconds during a lavish Met Gala-style party scene, mingling with other guests. They are among a star-studded lineup of cameos, including Lady Gaga, Donatella Versace, Heidi Klum, Naomi Campbell, and Karl-Anthony Towns.
How It Happened
Speaking on the New Heights podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce, McIlroy explained how a casual comment led to the opportunity. After winning The Players Championship last year, he mentioned watching The Devil Wears Prada the night before. Director David Frankel, whose son is a golf player, heard about it and reached out.
“The team reached out and said, ‘He was wondering if you would do some sort of cameo,’” McIlroy said. “I said to my wife Erica, ‘What do you think?’ and she said, ‘Yeah, absolutely.’ Then I texted back and asked, ‘Do you think Erica could be in it too?’ and they said, ‘Sure, bring her along.’ So we spent the day in New York and did it.”
Not a Movie Star
Despite the fun experience, McIlroy admitted he is not cut out for acting. “I am not a movie star. If you watch me act, you can tell I am not a movie star. It’s cool to be able to do these things and experience being on a movie set, but I am not cut out for that. It’s long days, it’s a grind. It really is.”
Director’s Praise
During the London premiere, Frankel praised McIlroy’s performance. “Well, the one I was most excited for will surprise isn’t even in the world of fashion. I mean I loved having Rory McIlroy. He was a great sport. A very good actor.”
