Rooney Sets Conditions for Football Management Return

Wayne Rooney has revealed he would consider a return to football management, but only under specific conditions. The former Manchester United and England captain, who was sacked by Plymouth Argyle on New Year's Eve 2024, said he would not take a job that required him to live away from his family again.

Speaking on The Smith Bros YouTube channel, Rooney said: 'I would, I definitely would if the right thing came up. But I wouldn't put myself in situations like [when I lived] in DC, lived in Plymouth, lived in Birmingham, lived away and missed a lot of my kids' football.' He acknowledged that his high-profile status and the financial constraints at clubs like Plymouth had been obstacles.

Rooney, 40, has since focused on punditry, appearing on Match of the Day, Sky Sports, and his own show, The Wayne Rooney Show, which launched in August 2025. He said he is 'happy just doing the TV work' for now.

The former striker also hinted at a possible boxing match, saying he would 'never say never' if the offer was right. Rooney previously sparred with ex-teammate Phil Bardsley in a viral video from 2015.
