On his BBC podcast, Rooney expressed incredulity at the snub, emphasising Alexander-Arnold's unique abilities. "I find it incredible that he's not in a 35-man squad," Rooney said. "It didn't sound like there was any way back for Trent in the squad, the way Thomas Tuchel spoke." He argued that Alexander-Arnold's ball-playing skills are unmatched among English players, despite defensive weaknesses the player himself acknowledges.
Rooney highlighted Alexander-Arnold's recent performances for Real Madrid, noting his recovery from injuries and adaptation to a new league. "He's as good on the ball as any player we've seen in the Premier League," Rooney asserted, suggesting there's a strong case for him to start for England. He speculated that Tuchel's decision might be influenced by off-field dynamics, such as relationships with other players like Jude Bellingham, though he admitted uncertainty about the exact reasons.
