Rooney backs Arsenal for title, predicts Man United fourth
Rooney: Arsenal could run away with title, United fourth

Wayne Rooney has predicted Manchester United will finish fourth in the Premier League and believes Arsenal are favourites who could 'run away' with the title. The Gunners begin their title defence on Friday night against newly-promoted Coventry City, having been crowned English champions for the first time in 22 years last season.

Arsenal's summer business

Mikel Arteta's squad has been strengthened with the signings of Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis, and the north London club are still interested in adding a new centre-back and another striker. Arsenal beat Manchester City in Sunday's Community Shield, dominating Enzo Maresca's side in a statement win ahead of the new campaign.

Rooney's top-four verdict

Rooney, a five-time Premier League winner, said on Stick to United: 'I would take top-four. I think maybe fourth, I still think need to get two of three more players in.' He added that Arsenal 'have the potential to run away with it' but expects a tight battle behind them.

'You're looking at Arsenal and Man City – Chelsea will be a lot better this season, Tottenham will be better. You've got Liverpool in there as well. So it's going to be tough,' Rooney said. 'I think Man United will finish fourth.'

Uncertainty at rivals

Maresca has a huge job replacing Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, while Liverpool are under new leadership after Andoni Iraola was appointed following Arne Slot's sacking. Chelsea finished 10th last season but are expected to improve under Xabi Alonso, and Roberto De Zerbi is preparing for his first full season at Tottenham.

Rooney noted that Michael Carrick 'did fantastic to get Man United back into the Champions League' but said it is 'unrealistic' to think they will win the league this year. He stressed the importance of United staying close to Arsenal, adding: 'I think Arsenal are the favourites to win it but can United nick second off Man City and start to build again and maybe challenge for the title next season?'

Manchester United face Hull City in their Premier League opener on Saturday, while Arsenal host Coventry City.
