Wayne Rooney has urged Arsenal to let teenage sensation Max Dowman enjoy his historic moment after the 16-year-old became the Premier League's youngest ever goalscorer. Dowman scored in Saturday's 2-0 win over Everton at the Emirates Stadium, breaking the record previously held by Rooney himself.
Dowman, aged 16 years and 73 days, ran more than half the length of the pitch before slotting home with virtually the last kick of the match. The goal moved Arsenal nine points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table, albeit having played a game more.
Speaking on BBC's The Wayne Rooney Show, the former Manchester United striker said: 'Let him enjoy it and go and express himself. Mikel Arteta and the senior players will not let him get ahead of himself. But you have to enjoy it as well.' Rooney famously scored for Everton against Arsenal in 2002 at 16 years and 360 days.
Dowman could play a key role in Arsenal's push for silverware, with the club still competing in four competitions. They face Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League last-16 second leg on Tuesday, followed by the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City on Sunday.
