Ronaldo retires from Portugal duty after suspension

Cristiano Ronaldo has retired from international duty with Portugal, bringing an end to a 23-year career with the national team.

The country's greatest ever player announced his decision via a video to camera on his social media channels.

A record-breaking international career

Ronaldo scored 146 goals in 234 games for Portugal, becoming the all-time leading scorer in the history of men's international football.

Between 2003 and 2026, his storied international career delivered three trophies: the European Championship title in France in 2016 and two UEFA Nations League titles, in 2019 and 2025.

Suspension and fallout

The striker was suspended by the Portuguese FA last month after he stormed out of the Nations League camp in October, having fallen out with manager Jorge Jesus. The 41-year-old was incensed at being an unused substitute against Norway, and he was then told he would not feature against Denmark in the next match.

He released a statement on social media accusing Jesus of "breaking his word" and of an "absolute breach of trust".

Ronaldo was also handed a £215 fine, with his 30-day ban beginning on the day of the Denmark game, intended so that he would not miss any future games.

That, however, has now been rendered irrelevant, with his decision to retire announced on Thursday.
