The president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), Fernando Gomes, has publicly defended Cristiano Ronaldo after the football icon faced backlash for not attending the funeral of Diogo Jota, the father of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota.
Gomes described the criticism directed at Ronaldo as an 'immense injustice', insisting that the Al-Nassr captain was deeply connected to the tributes despite his absence.
Ronaldo's Connection to the Tributes
According to Gomes, Ronaldo had a close relationship with the Jota family and was involved in paying respects in his own way. 'Cristiano was in constant contact with Diogo and his family during this difficult time,' Gomes stated. 'His absence does not reflect a lack of respect or care.'
Public Reaction and Criticism
Ronaldo's no-show at the funeral sparked debate among fans and media, with some questioning his commitment to his national teammates. However, Gomes dismissed these claims, emphasising that personal circumstances often dictate such decisions.
'People must understand that footballers are human beings with their own challenges,' he added. 'Cristiano has always been a leader on and off the pitch, and his contributions to Portuguese football are undeniable.'
A United Front
The Portuguese FA chief also highlighted the solidarity within the national team, noting that Ronaldo's leadership remains unwavering. 'The squad stands together, and Cristiano's role as captain is as strong as ever,' Gomes affirmed.
Despite the controversy, tributes continue to pour in for Diogo Jota Sr., with many in the football community remembering him as a beloved figure.
