Romero and Guimaraes Clash After Spurs Draw at Newcastle

Cristian Romero scored twice, including a stoppage-time equaliser, as Tottenham snatched a dramatic draw at Newcastle. The Spurs captain’s late goal denied the hosts victory in a scrappy encounter that saw both teams trade blows.

Newcastle took the lead through Bruno Guimaraes, who replaced the injured Sandro Tonali at half-time. The goal came from Anthony Gordon’s cross, with Nick Woltemade laying off for Guimaraes to fire home from the edge of the area. Romero quickly atoned for his role in that goal by heading Spurs level from a corner.

Chaos ensued when a VAR review awarded Newcastle a penalty after Dan Burn was judged to have been fouled by Rodrigo Bentancur. Anthony Gordon converted from the spot, but Romero had the final say, scoring a spectacular overhead kick from a punched corner to make it 2-2.

Spurs manager Thomas Frank praised his side’s character, saying: “I really liked the character of the team. This is a really difficult place to come and the performance showed fantastic mentality.” Newcastle boss Eddie Howe expressed disappointment, stating: “It wasn’t us at our best today. It’s disappointing.”
