Robson's Title Warning: Keep Bruno Fernandes to Win Premier League, Says United Legend
Manchester United have been issued a stark warning by club icon Bryan Robson: if they aspire to lift the Premier League trophy, they must resist the temptation to sell captain Bruno Fernandes this summer. Despite persistent rumours linking the Portuguese midfielder with a departure, Robson believes Fernandes is pivotal to United's title ambitions under manager Michael Carrick.
United's Revival and Fernandes' Form
The Red Devils are enjoying a remarkable resurgence, currently positioned third in the Premier League table and riding an impressive 11-game unbeaten streak. This run has solidified their Champions League qualification prospects and ignited hopes among supporters that a genuine title challenge could be mounted next season. Central to this upturn has been Bruno Fernandes, whose stellar performances have placed him in contention for the PFA Player of the Year award. With seven goals and 13 assists in just 25 league appearances, the 31-year-old skipper remains under contract until 2028, yet speculation about his future continues to swirl.
Robson's Advice on Transfers and Midfield Needs
Speaking exclusively to Boyle Sports, former United captain Bryan Robson urged the club to prioritise retaining Fernandes over pursuing high-profile attacking signings. He specifically mentioned England stars Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, and Morgan Rogers as players United should avoid, despite acknowledging their talent. "Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rogers are all very, very good players, but these lads are all attacking players," Robson stated. "I think in the midfield area Manchester United need a really top player who can defend and pass the ball well. That's the type of player we need."
Robson emphasised that United's recent signings, such as striker Sesko and Fernandes himself, have bolstered the squad, but adding more attacking options like Palmer, Bellingham, or Rogers would not address the team's requirements. "Because of the signings like this year, with Sesko up front and Bruno in midfield, all those players have great ability and pace, but they're not what United need," he explained.
Faith in Fernandes' Experience and Leadership
Questions have been raised about whether Fernandes, who has only won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup with United, can lead the club to a Premier League title. However, Robson expressed unwavering confidence in the midfielder's capabilities, citing his unique skills and positive influence. "Bruno Fernandes is a top player. He can do things on a football pitch other people can't. He creates chances, scores great goals, and his attitude is spot on. He's a great lad around the club," Robson praised.
Drawing from his own experience, Robson highlighted how age and fitness are not barriers to success. "I was 33 when we won the FA Cup, then we went on to win the League Cup, the European Cup Winners' Cup, the title, and the double. I was 33 when that all started, so when people keep talking about age—you can win a lot if you challenge yourself and keep really fit. If you've got the experience, you can help people around you, and I think Bruno can do that," he asserted. Robson concluded by noting that United's current playing style under Carrick further supports Fernandes' value to the team.
