Liverpool secured a dramatic 4-3 victory over Villarreal in the Champions League league phase, with 18-year-old Rio Ngumoha delivering a record-breaking performance. Ngumoha became the youngest player ever to provide two assists for Liverpool in the competition, earning the Player of the Match award.
The win was not straightforward, however, as Villarreal exposed weaknesses in Liverpool's man-for-man pressing system during a challenging opening half-hour. Manager Andoni Iraola's tactical adjustments, both before and at half-time, ultimately proved decisive in turning the game around.
Iraola's Mid-Game Tactical Shift
Speaking on Amazon Prime's post-match coverage, former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez highlighted Iraola's decision to move Alexis Mac Allister into a deeper midfield role, swapping positions with Trey Nyoni. Iraola explained the change: "It's true that after 2-0, we decided to throw Trey a little bit more one-sided to help a little bit on the left in the build-up, put Alexis more on the base and also defensively, [it was] a better adjustment there in the middle."
Iraola admitted the team struggled before the adjustment, stating: "Until we hadn't changed those adjustments I think we were really struggling because they were overloading us in the middle and Ronald [Araujo] was not really feeling confident to go all the way [into midfield] and it has cost us, yes."
Villarreal's Overload Tactics
Villarreal's manager Inigo Perez, who previously worked as Iraola's assistant at Rayo Vallecano, instructed left winger Alberto Moleiro to drop into midfield in possession, exploiting Araujo's reluctance to track him. This created three-against-two scenarios in midfield, allowing Villarreal to generate six shots inside the box in the opening half-hour (Opta).
Liverpool lost possession in midfield 23 times compared to Villarreal's 15 (Opta) before the tactical switch. The change simplified Araujo's role, allowing Tsimikas to provide width and putting Araujo closer to the centre of the pitch to track Moleiro's movements.
Wirtz's Impact After Half-Time
Iraola's half-time substitution of Araujo for Florian Wirtz, shifting Ryan Gravenberch to right-back, completed the momentum swing. Wirtz scored the winning goal, created two chances, completed two of three dribbles, and won seven of eight ground duels. From Villarreal's second goal until Moleiro was substituted after 54 minutes, the away side lost possession in their own defensive third 18 times compared to Liverpool's twice (Opta).
Mac Allister was also outstanding, scoring with a header and recording more shots (five) and more passes into the final third (14) than any other player. Cody Gakpo, returning from injury, won 9 of 13 duels and completed five of six dribbles.
Future Considerations
Gravenberch's hybrid right-back/midfield role in the second half could offer another option for Iraola, though it is unlikely to be used against Brighton this weekend. Liverpool's next opponents, Brighton, may test the left-back position, with Diego Gomez liking to drift inside from the wing.
Ngumoha's performance, including nine successful dribbles out of ten and 12 touches in the opposition box, raises questions about his potential. His 74th-minute withdrawal might hint at selection considerations for the weekend, as Liverpool continue to adapt to Iraola's system.
