Marcus Rashford will be handed a new squad number at Manchester United after his previous No10 shirt was given to new signing Matheus Cunha. The England international is set to take the No14 shirt, a number he wore during his loan spell at Barcelona.
Rashford's return to the squad
Rashford, 28, has not played a competitive match for United since a Europa League tie against Viktoria Plzen in December 2024. He was frozen out by former boss Ruben Amorim and spent time on loan at Aston Villa and Barcelona. He is now back with the squad after travelling to the Republic of Ireland for a pre-season training camp.
Carrick's comments on Rashford
Michael Carrick, speaking after Saturday's 1-1 friendly draw with Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg, said: "I've played with him. I played in the game he made his debut, so we have a history." He added: "We have got a full squad this week in Dublin. We fly straight there and have a few days where we have the whole group back together. Marcus is part of that, and Kobbie and Lisandro. We look forward to seeing them."
The No10 shirt situation
Rashford's No10 shirt was handed to Matheus Cunha after the Brazilian joined United from Wolves for £62.5 million. The No14 shirt has been vacant at Old Trafford since Christian Eriksen left at the end of the 2024-25 campaign. According to Fabrizio Romano, Rashford will be given the No14 shirt.
This suggests that Rashford, who is under contract until the summer of 2028, could have a role to play under Carrick in the 2026-27 season, assuming no bids arrive before the transfer window closes.
