Rangers extended their winless run in the Scottish Premiership to eight games after a dramatic 2-2 draw with Dundee United at Ibrox. Captain James Tavernier scored an 87th-minute equaliser to salvage a point for the home side, who are now without a win in eight league fixtures.
Interim manager Steven Smith, taking charge for the first time after Russell Martin’s sacking, saw his side dominate the first half. Thelo Aasgaard opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a fine solo effort, curling into the far corner after a deft touch from Djeidi Gassama. Rangers could have extended their lead but for saves from Dundee United goalkeeper Yevhenii Kucherenko.
However, the visitors rallied after the break. Substitute Kristijan Trapanovski levelled in the 67th minute, firing low past Jack Butland from the edge of the area. Craig Sibbald then put Dundee United ahead with a stunning 25-yard strike, leaving Rangers facing another defeat. Tavernier responded late on, guiding Mikey Moore's pass into the net, but Butland had to make a crucial save from Trapanovski to preserve the point.
Smith admitted his side were fortunate to escape with a draw. “To go from the level in the first half, where you think you should be two or three goals up, to coming away probably lucky to get a point is frustrating,” he said. He added that any potential new manager would see the talent in the squad but stressed the need for consistency.
Fan discontent was clear, with banners aimed at players and the board. One from the Union Bears read: “No more buses to hide on. No more managers to hide behind. Face your failures like men.” Another targeted chief executive Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell: “Stewart, Thelwell pack your bags and go before we pack them for you.” Former Rangers player Kevin Muscat is expected to be appointed as the new manager.
