Rangers have confirmed the appointment of Danny Röhl as their new manager, signing the German coach on an initial two-and-a-half-year contract. The 36-year-old will take charge immediately and is set to lead the team in Thursday's Europa League encounter against SK Brann.
The appointment ends a tumultuous search for a permanent successor to Russell Martin, who was sacked after 123 days in charge. Rangers had been in advanced talks with Kevin Muscat, but those negotiations collapsed, leaving the club to turn back to Röhl, who had previously ruled himself out of the running. Vice-chairman Paraag Marathe described the process as 'thorough' and said the club was confident they had identified the right person to lead the team forward.
Röhl, whose only previous managerial role was at Sheffield Wednesday, expressed his excitement at the challenge. 'It is a huge privilege to be taking on the role of head coach at such an incredible club,' he said in a statement. 'The expectations here are clear. The fans want to see results now – my mentality and experience is to think in exactly the same way.' He acknowledged the difficult start to the season but stressed there was still much to play for across four competitions.
Röhl had been close to landing the Rangers job during the summer, but the club opted to hire Russell Martin instead. That decision proved unpopular with supporters and short-lived.
