Rangers 'old garbage' taunt as Celtic gulf laid bare in Europe

Rangers have been told they have "more old garbage than my wheelie bin" as the gulf between Celtic and the rest of Scottish football was laid bare in European competition this week.

Celtic carry a healthy three-goal lead into their Champions League second leg against LASK in Austria, but some nervous supporters fear it may not be enough to see them through.

Celtic fans fear LASK fightback

Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, said: "I wholeheartedly agree with Martin O’Neill that Celtic’s return leg is still in the balance and I believe Celtic will need to score to progress as LASK proved at Celtic Park they are a potent attacking force.

"Indeed, I’m old enough to remember Celtic winning by the same margin against a star-studded Benfica side that included the legendary Eusabio back in 1969 on the road to our second European Cup final, only to lose the second leg by the same score.

"In the end, it took Billy McNeil correctly calling heads in the toss of a coin to get us through. So I’m hoping for the best but fearing the worst."

William Simpson also has a case of the jitters, saying: "All the talk of Celtic having one foot in the league phase is hearsay.

"They have to go out from the start and add to their goals tally. If they don’t, LASK will apply non-stop pressure, just like they did for the first half hour in Glasgow.

"The Austrians were unlucky not to be in front with offside ruling out two goals.

"Celtic might be in front, but our defence still looks like rabbits caught in headlights. And given a chance, LASK will exploit it."

Rangers slammed after slender win

But Charles Maxwell isn’t worrying just yet - and reckons it’s Rangers who should be concerned after they snatched only a slender 1-0 win over Conference League rivals Jablonec.

He said: "The gulf between Celtic and the rest was never more evident as was displayed in Europe this last week.

"While we dispatched LASK - who were a quality side, and better than anything we'll meet in the SPFL - in some style with three tremendous goals, our once nearest rivals served up an early frontrunner for worst game of the season as they toiled against a team of what looked like part timers that would struggle in our championship.

"I'm sure the Jablonec right back gave me a quote for the patio."

Stephen Johnstone, Ardentinny, also has serious doubts over Rangers’ qualification hopes.

He said: "Rangers will get bounced by the Czechs this week.

"We were lucky to win at Ibrox this new look team under McInnes has more chance of winning the Eurovision Song Contest than the Conference League.

"Cammy Devlin should have been shown the red card, not by the ref, but by the Ibrox board.

"He’s just a nightmare to watch, and this team has more old garbage than my wheelie bin."

McInnes urged to pick duo

Russell Black, Banchory, added: "I haven’t managed to see much of Rangers so far but from what I have, it’s clear that Rangers need players with the right mindset.

"Derek McInnes has two that I can see fitting the bill yet he never starts them - Connor Barron and Findlay Curtis.

"McInnes needs to start with these two so the others can see a proper example being set that they can follow."
