Royals attend church service near Balmoral estate

The King and Queen, along with the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children, attended a Sunday service at Crathie Kirk, a church near the Balmoral estate in Aberdeenshire.

Troops from Balaklava Company, 5th Battalion Royal Regiment of Scotland, formed a guard of honour as the royal family arrived at the small granite church. Soldiers lined both sides of the leafy driveway, and the fleet of cars passed between them before stopping at the door.

Royal arrivals

Charles and Camilla travelled in the first car, while William drove the second car, which also carried Kate and the couple’s three children. The Princess Royal and her husband Sir Tim Laurence were in another car, and the Duke of Edinburgh and his daughter Lady Louise arrived in a separate vehicle.

A crowd of onlookers had gathered outside the front of the church to witness the arrival.

Traditional holiday

The visit comes days after news emerged of the Duke of Sussex’s imminent return to the UK. The royal family arrived at the Balmoral estate earlier in the week for their traditional summer holiday. Crathie Kirk, a small Church of Scotland parish kirk, is their regular place of worship while staying at Balmoral, and Queen Elizabeth II regularly attended services there.
