In a poignant and emotionally charged moment, global music star Post Malone paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland during the NFL's Thanksgiving halftime show.
A Solemn Salute During a Celebratory Game
The performance took place at the AT&T Stadium in Texas during the highly anticipated Thanksgiving Day NFL game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Kansas City Chiefs. Malone, known for his eclectic style, took to the stage adorned in the Cowboys' signature navy colour, his jacket covered in various pins and buttons displaying pride for the hometown team.
However, one detail stood out with profound significance. On one side of his jacket, the number 94 was displayed in white font, a direct and moving reference to Marshawn Kneeland's jersey number.
Concluding his set, Malone addressed the roaring crowd, saying, "I love you so very much, Dallas, Texas." He continued, "Ladies and gentlemen, make some noise for the best team in the world, the Dallas Cowboys. I hope everyone has a great night, I hope everyone has a happy Thanksgiving, and I love you more than I can ever say." His final words were a direct message to the departed athlete: "And we love you 94. We love you."
Remembering Marshawn Kneeland
Marshawn Kneeland, aged just 24, died on 6 November, as confirmed by the Texas Department of Public Safety to The Independent. His death was ruled a suicide following a police chase.
Kneeland's football career began at Western Michigan University, from where he was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 2024. The team released a statement the morning after his passing, expressing their grief. "It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning," the statement read. "Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organisation. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family."
His agent, Jonathan Perzley, shared a touching tribute on Instagram, describing the loss as "a pain I can hardly put into words." He wrote of watching Kneeland evolve "from a hopeful kid at Western Michigan with a dream to being a respected professional for the Dallas Cowboys," noting that he "poured his heart into every snap, every practice, and every moment on the field."
A Promising Career Cut Short
The NFL also issued a statement, saying, "We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the passing of Cowboys’ Marshawn Kneeland. Our thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend Catalina, family, friends and his teammates."
During his two-season career in the NFL, Kneeland had shown significant promise. He played in 18 games with four starts, amassing 26 tackles and one sack. His debut season in 2024 was off to a strong start before a knee injury sidelined him for several games.
