Portuguese Media Rally Behind Sacked Manchester United Manager Ruben Amorim
Portuguese media have launched a robust defence of former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, asserting that his controversial decisions at Old Trafford were ultimately correct. This comes despite the club's marked improvement under interim boss Michael Carrick, which many have used to justify Amorim's premature dismissal.
A Bola Claims Amorim's Foundations Are Paying Off Under Carrick
While Michael Carrick has swiftly propelled Manchester United into the Premier League's top four since taking charge in January, winning seven of his eleven matches, Portuguese newspaper A Bola contends that the club is now reaping the benefits of foundations laid by Amorim. The column argues that time may prove many of Amorim's contentious choices in Manchester were sensible.
"It makes sense that the Portuguese coach's future continues to be written in England," the publication stated. "Time may show that many of his decisions in Manchester made sense."
Scrutinising Amorim's Controversial Tenure and Tactics
Amorim's 18-month reign was largely viewed as underwhelming, characterised by a stubborn adherence to an unproductive 3-4-3 formation. His record of 24 wins, 21 losses, and 18 draws stands in stark contrast to Carrick's immediate success. However, A Bola suggests the drama extended far beyond mere tactics.
The report acknowledges Amorim "certainly made mistakes" in seeking control beyond the typical managerial remit, including involvement in signings, scouting, and youth development. Yet, it also places significant blame on the United board, who hired him fully aware of his ambitious management style.
Off-Field Decisions Deemed Vindicated
Specifically, the Portuguese media point to several off-field decisions that have since been justified. Amorim's contentious moves to oust forwards Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho are described as vindicated. Furthermore, his strong advocacy for a new contract for midfielder Casemiro—who has experienced a remarkable resurgence under Carrick—now appears prescient.
"Amorim's drama was much bigger than the 3-4-3 formation," the article elaborates. "He tried to be the kind of manager that no longer exists in England – the coach who helps define signings and the adjacent structures, from scouting to youth development."
The Inevitable Clash and Carrick's Uncertain Future
Amorim's unwavering commitment to this expansive role led to public clashes with the United hierarchy, undoubtedly hastening his departure. The manager himself hinted he was aware of the risks involved. While it is impossible to know how Amorim's project might have unfolded with more time, the club's current form under Carrick is undeniable.
Nevertheless, Carrick's own long-term future at Manchester United remains uncertain, with no decision made regarding his position beyond this season. Despite the interim manager's success, A Bola maintains a firm stance that Amorim's tumultuous stint should not be categorised as an outright failure, arguing his legacy is more nuanced than often portrayed.
