Port Adelaide has removed club legend Warren Tredrea from its board after he refused to apologise for comments made by a guest on his podcast. The AFL club said it was not in its 'best interests' for the former captain to remain as a director.
The controversy stems from a May interview with a former British Army veteran that drew criticism from the Jewish Council of Australia for allegedly amplifying far-right antisemitic conspiracy theories. Tredrea denied being antisemitic, calling the accusation defamatory.
The board requested Tredrea apologise to the club and anyone offended, but the 46-year-old declined. A club statement said: 'After exhausting all reasonable avenues for resolution, the board determined that Mr Tredrea’s continuation as a director was not in the best interests of the club.'
Tredrea, who played 255 games and captained Port Adelaide to its only AFL premiership in 2004, said on social media he was 'concerned about the actions taken by a number of important people' leading to his dismissal. He plans to make further statements.
The club emphasised the decision was a governance matter, not a reflection on Tredrea's playing legacy, which it described as 'untarnished'. Tredrea had been elected to the board last year for a three-year term.
