Greater Manchester Police have issued a stark warning to supporters of Manchester United and Liverpool ahead of Saturday’s 5.30pm kick-off at Old Trafford, the first time since 2004 that the fixture has been scheduled so late.
The later start time has raised concerns that fans may consume more alcohol than usual before the match. Around 3,000 Liverpool supporters are expected to travel to Manchester for the game. GMP reminded fans that street drinking is prohibited in Manchester city centre and Trafford, and that this will be enforced around the stadium for both home and away supporters.
In a statement, police urged fans to behave responsibly, noting that recent league meetings between the two sides at Old Trafford have passed without incident. “We hope that supporters from both sides act in a responsible manner and enjoy the game, no matter what the result,” a spokesperson said.
Authorities have also warned against the use of pyrotechnics, stating that flares are not permitted inside the stadium and that offenders risk arrest, prosecution, and a banning order. Visiting fans will be limited to purchasing two alcoholic drinks inside the ground.
Police have engaged with supporter groups including the Football Supporters Federation, Spirit of Shankly, and the Manchester United Supporters Trust to discuss the policing operation and maintain good relations from previous seasons.
