Paddy Pimblett Confirms Summer UFC Comeback After First Career Loss
Paddy Pimblett has officially announced his return to the UFC cage this summer, following his first professional defeat in the promotion earlier this year. The Liverpudlian fighter could potentially feature on the same event card as the highly anticipated comeback of former champion Conor McGregor.
January Defeat to Gaethje Alters Championship Trajectory
Pimblett suffered his inaugural UFC loss in January when he was defeated by seasoned contender Justin Gaethje. A victory in that bout would have propelled him directly into a lightweight title showdown against champion Ilia Topuria, scheduled for July 14 at The White House. Instead, Pimblett will now make his competitive return approximately one month later, recalibrating his path toward championship contention.
Potential McGregor Co-Main Event During International Fight Week
The British fighter revealed his plans during an appearance on The Wayne Rooney Show, stating his intention to compete in approximately twelve weeks. "I'm just starting [my camp]," Pimblett explained. "I'm going to be fighting in 12 weeks or something, but I'm just starting my diet now. July 11 it's going to be. The World Cup is on, but I'll go out 11 or 12 days before."
This timeline positions Pimblett's return during the UFC's International Fight Week, where he could serve as support for McGregor's headline act. The Irish superstar has been widely tipped to make his first Octagon appearance in five years during this marquee event, creating potential for a stacked fight card.
Mature Response to First UFC Setback
Pimblett demonstrated remarkable resilience in processing his defeat to Gaethje, contrasting sharply with his earlier career reactions to losses. "I've lost before when I was younger - lost a couple when I was 18 and 22/23," he reflected. "After all them fights, I was proper devastated, like sat there crying and that. I didn't even cry after [the loss to Gaethje]. I just watched it back the next day and was like, yeah, I could have done this different, could have done that differently."
The fighter emphasized his personal growth and philosophical perspective on the outcome. "I've matured a lot. I know I could have won that fight if certain things had gone my way, but it's one of those: it was his night. I always say it's destiny he was meant to win. I know I'm going to win the belt, that's in my destiny. It was just that it wasn't my time. So I just have to keep training, working hard, and it will come."
McGregor's Simultaneous Comeback Preparation
Meanwhile, Conor McGregor has confirmed his own return to training following the resolution of legal proceedings with former training partner Artem Lobov. The dispute centered around McGregor's whiskey business, with the Irish fighter expressing relief at its conclusion. "I'm satisfied that this matter has been resolved and I can focus on my training and this summer's fight," McGregor stated. "I want to thank Artem for his hard work for my whiskey business."
McGregor's last competitive appearance occurred in 2021 when he suffered a broken leg during his trilogy bout against Dustin Poirier. His planned summer return represents one of the most anticipated comebacks in recent MMA history, potentially creating a synergistic pairing with Pimblett's own redemption narrative on the same fight card.
Both fighters now enter crucial training camps, with Pimblett seeking to rebound from his first UFC defeat and McGregor aiming to reclaim his status among the sport's elite after an extended absence due to injury and legal matters.
