PGA Tour Stars Welcome Rory McIlroy Back After Three-Event Hiatus
PGA Tour Stars Welcome Rory McIlroy Back After Hiatus

Several PGA Tour stars have let Rory McIlroy know exactly what they think of him after he took a prolonged break from competition. The 37-year-old returned to the driving range at Quail Hollow ahead of the Truist Championship, receiving a warm reception from fellow professionals.

McIlroy's Hiatus and Return

McIlroy has been enjoying a brief hiatus from his professional commitments after successfully defending his Masters crown for a second consecutive year. During his time away, he sat out three tournaments: the RBC Heritage, the Zurich Classic (where his regular partner Shane Lowry paired with Brooks Koepka), and the Cadillac Championship. The star has been recuperating as he savours his second Green Jacket, but now gears up for his comeback at the Truist Championship.

Warm Reception from Peers

As McIlroy eased himself back into competition, fellow PGA Tour stars paid tribute to his achievements while preparing for the event at Quail Hollow. A recent video shared on the PGA Tour's social media channels showed McIlroy on the driving range, loosening up after nearly a month away from the game. While doing so, he noticed Cameron Young, who claimed the Cadillac Championship at Doral in commanding style, and promptly applauded his fellow golfer.

"Cam, congrats," McIlroy was heard saying to Young, before the pair shared a brief exchange. Young then enquired whether his fellow golf star "enjoyed his break," prompting McIlroy to respond: "Yeah, it's been nice. It's been nice."

Hideki Matsuyama also paused to acknowledge McIlroy with a firm handshake as he and his caddie passed the two-time Masters champion. On the whole, those who crossed paths with the star were friendly as they geared up for the Truist Championship.

Quail Hollow: A Familiar Venue

For McIlroy, arriving at Quail Hollow represents the first time he has stepped onto the course since capturing the Masters in mid-April. His presence at the Truist marks the fifth consecutive year he will have taken part in the tournament. Moreover, McIlroy will be aiming to claim victory for the fifth time, having secured the title in 2010, 2015, 2021, and 2024. No other golfer has lifted the trophy more than twice, which might explain why the star is keen to return to a venue he knows inside out.

State Dinner with President Trump

Despite staying away from the course for weeks, McIlroy did attend a state dinner with President Donald Trump and King Charles after giving the Cadillac Championship a miss. McIlroy and his wife Erica were guests at Trump's Miami course, and as the President spoke about the bond between the United States and the United Kingdom, he took the opportunity to heap praise on the golf legend.

"This unconquerable courage, it really is, it's unconquerable. Speaking of that, where's Rory McIlroy? Stand up Rory, will you please? That was unconquerable courage," Trump ad-libbed. "That was very good, Rory. I don't know if that helps, talk about how wonderful in the speech, but I had to interrupt my speech, because I watched that man win a tournament, that was a tough, that was a tough one. Congratulations, very proud of you. Alright, now I'll get back to my speech, Rory."

McIlroy's Motivation

Regarding his choice to take a break, McIlroy revealed it stemmed from a wish to avoid burning himself out: "So I still want to enjoy it. I've got a couple of weeks off before I go back to play competitive golf but I don't think I'll go through that lull of motivation or the sort of things that I was feeling last year post-winning this tournament."
