Vitor Pereira has openly acknowledged that Nottingham Forest's involvement in European competition is severely undermining their efforts to avoid relegation from the Premier League. The manager's concerns come in the wake of a 2-1 loss to Brighton, a result that leaves Forest perilously close to the drop zone.
Defeat at Brighton Highlights Strain
Forest's defeat at Brighton on Sunday saw them remain just two points above the relegation threshold. This match occurred only three days after their Europa League play-off fixture against Fenerbahce, highlighting a congested schedule that Pereira believes is taking its toll on the squad.
Fatigue and Tactical Challenges
Pereira pointed to the disparity in preparation time as a key factor in the loss. "They (Brighton) prepared in seven days, not in three days as we did," he stated. "They tried to press us and we didn't find the proper spaces to go. They scored again after a mistake." Despite resting captain Morgan Gibbs-White for the European tie, who then scored Forest's equaliser after Diego Gomez put Brighton ahead, the team appeared fatigued and succumbed to Danny Welbeck's winner.
The manager emphasised the impact of squad rotation, noting, "We rested Morgan for the last game. It makes a big difference. If I didn't change for the last game, imagine now." He elaborated on the difficulties of balancing competitions, saying, "Competing in the Europa League and competing again after three days, we needed to understand the proper times to press and the proper times to wait, the proper time to go fast or the proper time to keep the ball."
Upcoming Fixture Crunch
The challenges are set to intensify for Forest in the coming days. They face a daunting trip to Manchester City on Wednesday, followed by a Europa League last-16 clash against Danish side Midtjylland. This encounter marks the start of a critical 10-day period where Forest will play four matches, culminating in a pivotal away game against fellow relegation contenders Tottenham.
Pereira's admission underscores the broader struggle for clubs juggling domestic and European ambitions, with survival in the Premier League now hanging in the balance. The team's ability to manage fatigue and adapt tactics will be crucial as they navigate this demanding run-in.
