Pereira Defends Risky Team Selection as Forest Survive Fenerbahce Scare
Pereira Defends Risky Team Selection in Forest's Europa League Win

Nottingham Forest manager Vitor Pereira has openly admitted he "took a risk" by making six changes to his starting lineup for Thursday night's Europa League play-off second leg against Fenerbahce, a gamble that nearly proved costly before his team ultimately secured their place in the last 16.

A Tense Night at the City Ground

Forest appeared to have comfortably secured their progression after a commanding 3-0 victory in the first leg in Istanbul last week. However, the Turkish side launched a spirited comeback attempt at the City Ground, with Kerem Akturkoglu scoring twice to put Fenerbahce 2-0 up on the night and threaten one of European football's great turnarounds.

Pereira's Calculated Gamble

The Portuguese manager's decision to rotate his squad was driven by the need to prioritise Sunday's crucial Premier League fixture against Brighton. "We are in the moment of the season that we need to think not about one game, but about two games, about the next game," Pereira explained in his post-match comments.

"It was a risk because I decided to make six changes in the team. If you have one or two changes the players can be in the middle of the others, and you don't miss the quality. But when you change six players they aren't used to playing 90 minutes. This is the risk. I decide to take this risk," he stated candidly.

Pereira emphasised that his primary concern was ensuring his team had sufficient "fuel and energy" for the upcoming league match, acknowledging the difficulty of facing Brighton away from home. "My decisions were not just about this game, it was worth thinking about the next game, and was a pity for me, because in my intention was to give confidence for everybody," he added.

Half-Time Intervention Proves Crucial

With his team struggling and the tie hanging in the balance, Pereira made the bold decision to make four substitutions at half-time, a move that helped Forest regain some control in the second period. Callum Hudson-Odoi's strike after the break ultimately killed off the tie, securing a 2-1 defeat on the night but a 4-2 aggregate victory.

"It's difficult for a manager to do four subs," Pereira reflected. "It's not about one player. I was not disappointed with one player, I was feeling that I need to do something to face the second half. It's difficult to look in the eyes of the players and do four subs, but it is my life, it is my job and I did it."

He described the decision as based on intuition, saying, "If you start to feel that we are not controlling the game, and we are in risk to not control the game in our way, you must do it. It is not about personal players."

Fenerbahce Exit with Heads Held High

Despite the defeat, Fenerbahce manager Domenico Tedesco expressed pride in his team's performance, particularly their first-half display where they created numerous opportunities that could have completed the remarkable comeback.

"We are proud of the way we played tonight, with personality," Tedesco said. "Tonight we played maturely, we had many, many opportunities. We have to accept, we are out of the competition, but at least with the head held high."

The victory sets up a last-16 meeting for Nottingham Forest with either Real Betis or FC Midtjylland, while Pereira's attention now turns to maintaining Premier League momentum against Brighton this weekend.
