Arsenal have announced the appointment of Pascal De Maesschalck as their new academy director, ending the search for Per Mertesacker's successor.
De Maesschalck's Background and Experience
De Maesschalck brings extensive experience from senior youth development roles across European football. He spent three years as director of youth development at Monaco, following a highly successful 10-year spell as head of academy at Belgian side Club Brugge. At Club Brugge, he established a strong reputation for developing young talent and creating clear pathways to first-team football.
Most recently, De Maesschalck served as technical director at French club Strasbourg since 2024. He will officially join Arsenal on August 1, according to a club statement.
Replacing Per Mertesacker
Arsenal's recruitment drive for a new academy director began in January after Mertesacker confirmed he would leave his role at the end of the 2025-26 season. The German had overseen the club's youth ranks since 2018, moving straight into that position after retiring as a player. During his tenure, several players emerged from the Hale End academy into Mikel Arteta's first team, including Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri, and Max Dowman.
De Maesschalck's Responsibilities
Arsenal have outlined De Maesschalck's tasks: “As our academy director, Pascal will lead our academy programme, overseeing the development of our young players while helping to further strengthen our recruitment of outstanding young talent from across the UK and around the world.”
The club added: “His appointment reflects our continued commitment to building one of the world's leading academies and ensuring talented young players have the environment, support and opportunities to reach their full potential.”
Club Reaction
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta said: "We are delighted to welcome Pascal to Arsenal. He brings extensive experience from some of Europe's leading football clubs and has an outstanding track record in youth development. We are excited to have him with us as we continue to build for the future, developing young players and identifying the best emerging talent to join Arsenal on a journey towards professional football."
