New West Ham manager Scott Parker has revealed the half-time team talk that prompted a memorable turnaround away at Cardiff in his first match in charge.
The Hammers trailed 3-0 after only 39 minutes of their latest Championship clash in Wales on Wednesday night, which came just hours after Parker had been officially confirmed as the successor to the sacked Nuno Espirito Santo.
But Parker's message at the interval hit home as West Ham staged an incredible recovery to snatch an unlikely 3-3 draw.
Goals fuel remarkable recovery
Goals either side of the hour mark from Divine Mukasa and Arne Engels were followed by Max Kilman's 82nd-minute strike, cancelling out Jack Moylan's first-half hat-trick and giving Parker his first point as Hammers boss.
“I came in here at nine o’clock this morning and met the players for the first time, so I didn’t have a lot of input as such,” he said afterwards.
“As you can imagine, it was a difficult half-time talk. I just helped them tactically and told them, ‘OK, this is the way it needs to be now’.
“Certainly out of possession, we needed to be more aggressive.
“There were tactical changes and substitutions, and we became more front-footed. We took a few more risks.”
History of effective team talks
It is not the first time that Parker's half-time speeches have had the desired effect. Bournemouth previously released footage of Parker's team talk when his former club were locked at 0-0 with automatic promotion rivals Nottingham Forest in the penultimate game of the 2021/22 Championship season.
Bournemouth went on to earn promotion with a 1-0 win via a late Kieffer Moore goal, while Parker has previous with motivating West Ham. Former team-mate Carlton Cole labelled the midfielder as “inspirational” when he stood up to give a Hammers team talk as a player, with West Ham going from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with West Brom.
Character and learning
Speaking about his side's performance against Cardiff, Parker said: “The first half was poor in many aspects. We were very passive and slow with the ball.
“The biggest positive is the team we saw in the second half. That’s what the biggest learning was.
“These boys have come off two defeats. You come to Cardiff away and you’re three-nil down at half-time. I can only imagine what they were feeling.
“They showed a lot of character and that pleased me the most.”
Pre-season promotion favourites West Ham currently sit eighth in the Championship table after 14 games played, five points behind league leaders Middlesbrough.
