Palace weigh up Sage future after Spurs defeat

Crystal Palace face a decision over Pierre Sage's future after the Eagles slipped to another defeat, losing 2-0 to Tottenham on Saturday evening and dropping into the Premier League relegation zone.

The result extends a run of three league games without a victory, dating back to the start of October when Palace beat former manager Oliver Glasner's Nottingham Forest side 3-1 at Selhurst Park.

Early red card proves costly

Palace were reduced to ten men early on at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after Jean-Philippe Mateta was shown a red card for a late challenge on Micky van de Ven. The forward's initial yellow card was upgraded to red after VAR intervened and advised referee Michael Oliver to consult the pitchside monitor.

Archie Gray then headed in the opener for a resurgent Spurs side who have climbed to eighth, and former Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke added a second after half time to wrap up the points on a comfortable evening for Roberto De Zerbi's hosts, who have now won three consecutive games in the English top flight.

Pressure mounts on Sage

Questions had already been raised about Sage's long-term future at Palace, and his position will come under further scrutiny after a sixth league defeat in nine, with just two victories coming from the opening Premier League matches of his tenure.

The Eagles host Hoffenheim in the Europa League next, before welcoming Liverpool to Selhurst Park the following weekend.
