Jordan Henderson's father has revealed that the England midfielder's arm is 'completely smashed' following a freak accident during celebrations after the 3-2 World Cup win over Mexico. Henderson slipped while jumping over an advertising board after the match and suffered a broken radius. He left the pitch on a stretcher and was given oxygen, and has since undergone surgery, ruling him out of the remainder of the tournament.
The former Liverpool captain, now at Brentford, was injured in the immediate aftermath of the victory at Azteca Stadium, where goals from Jude Bellingham (2) and Harry Kane secured England's place in the quarter-finals. Despite the injury, Henderson will remain with the squad for the rest of the World Cup.
His father, Brian Henderson, described the moment he realised the severity of the injury. 'At first I just thought he’d fallen, I thought he’d maybe scraped his wrist. I had no idea it was that serious until they were interviewing Harry Kane and a trolley came past with Jordan on it,' he told the Daily Mail. 'It’s his left forearm, he’s just completely smashed it. He’s going to have a cast on and then it depends on what the experts say.'
England defender Marc Guehi said Henderson is now 'in a better place' after the accident. 'Hendo’s good. It was obviously scary for him and his family and for everyone else, but we’re just glad that he’s on the road to a speedy recovery,' Guehi told England's Lion's Den programme.
