Celtic thrashed Hearts 7-0 at home on Sunday, easing the mounting pressure on manager Martin O'Neill after a run of four defeats in five games. The resounding victory came just days after a disappointing European outing, providing a much-needed boost for the club and its supporters.
A Dominant Display from the Off
Celtic took the lead within six minutes when Kieran Tierney headed in from close range. The goals continued to flow, with the team reaching five before the half-time whistle. Hearts' defensive disarray was epitomised by their fifth goal conceded, as Stephen Kingsley, attempting to prevent Mika Baur's chip from crossing the line, only succeeded in knocking it in off the legs of Jamie McCart.
The manner of the defeat was described as a "butchering" and a "blood-curdling rampage" that left the visitors from Tynecastle in a state of collapse. Hearts' manager, Wouter Vrancken, was criticised for setting up his team in a haphazard and cavalier manner for such a significant match, disregarding defensive responsibilities in a risky approach that yielded no reward.
O'Neill's Bold Selection Calls Pay Off
O'Neill made several significant changes to the starting lineup. The misfiring striker Kasper Hogh, who was substituted at half-time in the midweek defeat to Benfica, was left on the bench. This suggested the manager had seen enough to determine the £11million man was not delivering value for money.
Dane Murray started again in the centre of defence, with Liam Scales replacing Auston Trusty. Callum Osmand was also given a start after an impressive substitute appearance in the previous match, a move that allowed Camilo Duran to lead the attack through the middle. The changes proved effective, with Osmand scoring twice in the first half and Duran adding a goal shortly after the restart, set up by an outstanding Tierney.
Newfound Energy and a Remaining Dilemma
Osmand's performance was particularly notable, as this was his first start in senior football. The 20-year-old's energy and running power offered a different dimension to Celtic's play, even with competition looming from Jota and Yang Hyun-Jun. Haissem Hassan and Benjamin Nygren were also restored to the side, with Nygren wrapping up the scoring eight minutes from time with Celtic's seventh goal, following unselfish work from the substitute Hogh.
The only negative on the day was Hogh's failure to get on the scoresheet despite the team's prolific display. The result leaves the question of whether this is a genuine turning point or just another spike in a succession of early season dips. O'Neill will gain a clearer picture on Thursday when Celtic face La Liga side Celta Vigo in a crucial Europa League match, needing a strong result after two defeats in the competition.
