Celtic manager Martin O'Neill has insisted that Luke McCowan still has a significant future at the club after holding talks with the midfielder on Friday. The 28-year-old has been left out of match-day squads since coming off the bench at half-time in the Premiership defeat to Rangers on September 20.
McCowan's season so far
McCowan has made just seven substitute appearances this season. O'Neill believes the former Dundee player's confidence took a hit after struggling in the Champions League play-off defeat against LASK and in the match against Rangers.
The manager, preparing for tomorrow's Premiership encounter at Falkirk, said: "No, Luke has not been in the squad. But in my time here he's done fine.
"We are trying to get a bit of strength about us. Strangely enough, I spoke to Luke on Friday so it's something that's been on my mind. He'll be a bit frustrated because of what he did for us last season. We'll see.
"There will be opportunities for him to get back before Christmas."
Confidence and future prospects
O'Neill used McCowan frequently last term, with the midfielder making 42 appearances and earning a new deal until 2028. The Hoops boss admitted he can understand the player's frustration.
O'Neill said: "In terms of improvements? I feel Luke is very comfortable with the ball.
"He lost a bit of confidence against Rangers and LASK when he came on, that's all. He's not to blame for proceedings. But he lost it a couple of times.
"I'm not saying he's rock bottom, far from it. He trains brilliantly for us, like Tony Ralston. Those boys might think it's very frustrating but they train like demons.
"It's not just Luke, you'll have players at every club who just want to be in the side. You go four or five weeks without playing and wonder if you are ever going to get in.
"But, honestly, we'll see. Of course if it's over a longer time, then players want to play."
Team news for Falkirk
McCowan could be in the frame for the Falkirk match, with O'Neill set to rotate the squad ahead of Thursday's Europa League clash with Besiktas. Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jota could be kept off the artificial pitch as they rebuild fitness following injuries, while Auston Trusty has returned to the USA following the death of his father.
