Manchester United have confirmed that Andre Onana has rejoined Trabzonspor on loan for the 2026-27 season, a move that bolsters Michael Carrick's plans to reshape his goalkeeping department. The 30-year-old Cameroonian spent last season on loan at the Turkish club, where he revitalised his career after falling out of favour at Old Trafford.
Onana made 40 appearances for Trabzonspor last term, helping the club win the Turkish Cup and finish third in the Super Lig. The new loan deal, announced on Friday, will see Trabzonspor pay a fee of £1.3 million and cover Onana's wages in full, though no option to buy has been included.
Onana's departure frees up space in United's squad and wage budget, allowing Carrick to pursue a new goalkeeper. The club have reportedly shortlisted Leeds United's Karl Darlow and Wolves' Sam Johnstone as potential signings to serve as an experienced understudy to Senne Lammens, who impressed in his first season after joining from Royal Antwerp.
United also plan to offload Altay Bayindir, who served as Lammens' back-up during the 2025-26 campaign. The 28-year-old Turkey international has made only 17 appearances in three seasons at Old Trafford and is said to have agreed personal terms with Besiktas, who were linked with a move in January.
Onana has spoken warmly of his time in Turkey, telling Turkish outlet Yeniasir in December: "I'm very happy, trust me. I'm living the best period of my life. I can't complain, I'm very happy to be here." He added that the passionate support from fans has made his spell "perfect" and "truly incredible, amazing".
