Trey Nyoni has been tipped as a potential long-term solution to Liverpool's midfield needs after his standout display in the 3-1 Carabao Cup win over Tottenham Hotspur. Pundits Jamie Redknapp and Conor Coady suggested the 19-year-old could become an alternative to Bournemouth's £100m-rated Alex Scott.
The Reds were heavily linked with signing a new midfielder in the summer transfer window but chose not to strengthen that area of the squad. Nyoni was in action on Tuesday night as Liverpool claimed victory in the third round of the Carabao Cup, with goals from Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai.
Nyoni's Performance Earns Praise
Nyoni was named in the starting line-up by Andoni Iraola and played a key role in midfield alongside Mac Allister and James McConnell before being substituted around the hour mark. His performance drew plaudits from former Liverpool star Jamie Redknapp, who spoke to Sky Sports about the teenager's display.
"I thought he [Nyoni] was excellent in that first half, but he's got a lot to learn in that area, it's a specialised position," Redknapp said. "He did himself no harm whatsoever. Playing forward, getting the ball into good areas, comfortable on the ball. He's just a really good footballer who just sees the picture."
Comparison to Alex Scott
Liverpool were linked with a number of midfielders throughout the summer transfer window, including Bournemouth's Alex Scott, whom Iraola managed during his time with the Cherries. Reports have suggested Scott is valued at approximately £100m and was linked with Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United over the summer.
Former Everton defender Conor Coady, who appeared alongside Redknapp for Sky Sports' coverage, believes Nyoni could emulate Scott's trajectory under Iraola's guidance.
"We see someone like a Trey Nyoni, I'm hoping he goes on and has an incredible Liverpool career, because I really rate him that highly," Coady said. "He could become that [next Alex Scott], rather than going out and buy someone, he could become that if he learns and takes on everything that Andoni Iraola is trying to do."
