Celtic playmaker Benjamin Nygren has been pitched as a surprise transfer target for Manchester United, with the club in crisis. Legendary Swedish star Anders Limpar believes the 24-year-old could make the grade in the English Premier League after his exploits in Scotland, and reckons Old Trafford chiefs could land a bargain.
United's nightmare week
United have endured a difficult week which has left boss Michael Carrick on the brink of being shown the door, just months after he guided the club to third and back to the Champions League. Como thumped the Red Devils 4-0 in the league phase earlier this week, leading to captain Bruno Fernandes publicly questioning the game plan from his boss after Carrick extended their winless run to seven against the Italian side.
The skipper was then dropped for Sunday's showdown with Bournemouth, where the Cherries ran out 3-0 winners at Old Trafford. It was the first Premier League match of the season that did not see Fernandes appear, as he watched from the sidelines. Carrick was cheered off despite the drubbing, while the players were met with furious boos by angry fans. The club are currently languishing in 16th spot in the table, just a point above the relegation zone.
Limpar backs Nygren for Premier League
Amid the backdrop of the Fernandes fallout, Limpar reckons that English clubs, including United, should be queuing up to snap up the Celtic playmaker. Nygren netted 23 goals last term and has chipped in with eight strikes already this season, but has found it difficult to win over the Parkhead faithful with his performances.
Limpar told PariuriX: “Benjamin Nygren is good enough to play in the Premier League, and you can see that he’s still knocking them in for Celtic for fun. It would be stupid for clubs in the Premier League to not buy him this summer. Man United at the moment are struggling. Really, really struggling. Liverpool are struggling at the moment. Everton are not struggling, but they need quality forwards like Nygren.
“There are a few clubs he can actually choose from that haven’t got a good winger/forward. So, all the Premier League clubs should be looking at this guy, because he’s going to come cheap and he’s a hell of a player.”
