Nuno Blasts VAR Confusion After Arsenal Denied West Ham Equaliser
Nuno Slams VAR Chaos After West Ham Denied Late Equaliser

Nuno Espirito Santo has voiced his frustration over the lack of clarity in officiating after a controversial VAR decision denied West Ham United a stoppage-time equaliser against Arsenal, a result that puts the Gunners within touching distance of the Premier League title and leaves the Hammers perilously close to relegation.

VAR Controversy Decides Key Clash

West Ham thought they had secured a point when Callum Wilson found the net in the 95th minute. However, after an extensive review involving 17 replays, VAR official Darren England ruled the goal out, judging that West Ham striker Pablo had placed his hand on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya's arm, constituting a foul.

"All of us don't understand what is a foul, what isn't a foul," said Nuno. "I think even referees confuse themselves."

The decision has massive implications at both ends of the table. Arsenal now lead Manchester City by five points, having played one game more. Victory against Burnley next Monday and Crystal Palace on the final day would secure the title. For West Ham, they remain one point behind 17th-placed Tottenham, having played an extra game, with Spurs facing Leeds later tonight.

Lack of Consistency

Nuno highlighted the broader issue of inconsistent officiating, particularly regarding grappling in the penalty area. "In recent seasons there's been a lot of grappling, holding, almost like a wrestling situation," he added. "And it's upsetting. Sometimes it is penalised, sometimes it's not. And today it's frustrating."

He questioned the criteria for fouls at set pieces: "Because then you look at every corner in the Premier League, what's happening? What is the barrier, what is the frontier of what is a foul and what is not a foul?"

The West Ham manager believes the confusion extends to everyone involved. "I think it's up to the referees to dictate what is a foul, what is allowed, what is not allowed. Because it seems like the rules have changed. And everybody feels confused and frustrated. The players don't understand it."

Players React

West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen also criticised the decision, pointing to the length of time taken to review the incident. "Goalkeepers are protected more than outfield players," said Bowen. "There's lots of holding and grappling going on in the box. The keeper has to expect contact. There's going to be tussles."

He added: "When you look at the screen for five minutes, you'll find something. I'm sure if you look long enough, you'll find something. Do I think it's the right decision? No."

In contrast, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta defended the officials, praising their bravery and consistency. "Today I have realised how difficult and how big the referee's job is," said Arteta. "Because you're talking about a moment that can decide the history of two massive clubs who are fighting with their lives to achieve their objectives. And the pressure is huge."

He described the decision as "very brave" and in line with the guidance given throughout the season. "When you look at the action in that way, I think it is an obvious error so the goal has to be disallowed."
