Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis was involved in an apparent altercation in the stands during the Euroleague Basketball final between Olympiacos and Real Madrid on Sunday night. The 58-year-old was seen with a ripped shirt, shouting at an individual while being separated by a barrier and security workers, according to footage shared on social media.
Greek outlet ekathimerini reported that Marinakis was arguing with Grigoris Dmitriadis, the nephew of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Dmitriadis stepped down as general secretary of the prime minister's office in 2022 following a wiretapping scandal known as 'Greece's Watergate', which involved surveillance software 'Predator' used on 87 individuals, including government ministers, military officials and journalists.
Marinakis' media outlets, which include two of Greece's largest newspapers and the second biggest TV channel, have been at the forefront of investigative journalism into the illegal surveillance claims. No government officials, including Dmitriadis, have been charged in court, and critics have accused the government of attempting to cover up the truth.
Nottingham Forest were approached for comment on the incident, but a spokesperson for Marinakis declined to comment. On the court, Olympiacos secured their fourth Euroleague crown with a 92-85 victory over Real Madrid.
Marinakis has owned Olympiacos since 2010, overseeing 11 league titles and the club's Europa Conference League triumph in 2024. He purchased Nottingham Forest in 2017 and guided the club to Premier League promotion in 2022. Forest finished 16th in the Premier League this season, five points above the relegation zone.
