Jack Rodwell, the Everton midfielder who has been hailed as a future England international, celebrated his 18th birthday with a quiet family meal near his home in Birkdale, Southport. The teenager, who recently signed a five-year contract with the Blues after scoring his first senior goal against Aston Villa in the FA Cup, has been praised for his mature performances on the pitch.
His mother, Carol Rodwell, expressed pride in her son's achievements, noting that he has handled the attention well. 'Jack didn't want a big party or anything like that. We are so proud of him,' she said. 'As a child Jack ate, drank and slept football. I think his ambition was always to be a professional.'
Rodwell's talent was nurtured from a young age. He was spotted by Everton scouts while playing for Birkdale United and joined the club's academy at age eight. His former teacher, Nick Hanlon, recalled Rodwell's exceptional ability during his time at Farnborough Junior School. 'He was absolutely outstanding and loved playing for us because we let him go up front,' Hanlon said. 'He was calm, reliable, and could handle being under pressure.'
Rodwell has already made a mark on the national stage, becoming the first player to score for an England side at the new Wembley stadium. He played in the first half of the FA Cup quarter-final win over Middlesbrough on Sunday. Everton manager David Moyes has compared him to Rio Ferdinand, and the midfielder has attracted interest from Arsenal and Manchester United.
