Vancouver Whitecaps Stun LAFC in Dramatic MLS Playoff Penalty Victory
Nine-man Whitecaps eliminate LAFC in epic MLS playoff clash

In one of the most dramatic matches of the MLS postseason, the Vancouver Whitecaps produced a stunning upset against Los Angeles FC, advancing to their first-ever Western Conference final after a breathtaking penalty shootout victory.

Epic Encounter Decided by Spot-Kicks

The match unfolded before a club-record crowd of 53,957 spectators at BC Place in Vancouver, witnessing a contest that had everything - goals, red cards, woodwork strikes and ultimately penalty drama. After playing to a 2-2 draw through regulation and 30 minutes of extra time, the Whitecaps held their nerve to triumph in the shootout.

Defender Mathías Laborda emerged as the unlikely hero, not only scoring in regular time but also converting the winning penalty that sent Vancouver through. The victory becomes even more remarkable considering the Whitecaps played the latter stages with only nine men after receiving two red cards.

Rollercoaster Match Sees Lead Evaporate

Vancouver appeared to be cruising toward victory after establishing a commanding first-half lead. The breakthrough came in the 39th minute when goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka launched an incredible pass three-quarters the length of the pitch to Emmanuel Sabbi, who calmly finished for his first postseason goal.

The home side doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time through Laborda, who scored unassisted for his maiden playoff goal in seven postseason appearances over three seasons.

However, LAFC mounted a spectacular second-half comeback spearheaded by Son Heung-min. The Korean superstar reduced the deficit in the 60th minute with his first playoff goal, then delivered a stunning equaliser from a free kick in the 95th minute to force extra time.

Shootout Drama Seals Historic Victory

The extra period saw LAFC dominate possession and create numerous chances, striking the woodwork three times but failing to find a winning goal. This set the stage for a penalty shootout that would determine which team advanced to face either San Diego FC or Minnesota United.

The shootout began disastrously for LAFC as Son Heung-min rattled his effort off the post. Vancouver's Sebastian Berhalter converted confidently to give the Whitecaps an early advantage. After both teams traded successful penalties, Mark Delgado sent his attempt over the crossbar, presenting Vancouver with a golden opportunity.

Ryan Gauld extended Vancouver's lead before LAFC mounted a brief comeback, but ultimately Mathías Laborda stepped up to seal the historic victory, sparking wild celebrations among the record-breaking home crowd.

The victory marks Vancouver's first conference final appearance since joining MLS in 2011, having previously fallen at the semi-final stage in both 2015 and 2017. Goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka delivered an outstanding performance with six saves, continuing his impressive postseason record of conceding only 12 goals across nine playoff starts over three seasons.
