Former gymnast Nile Wilson is backing Max Whitlock for a triumphant return at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. Whitlock, Britain's most decorated gymnast, retired after the Paris 2024 Olympics but returned to competition in November 2025 after a fourth-place finish left him unsatisfied. The 33-year-old now aims to add to his 10 Commonwealth Games medals for Team England.
Wilson's Support for Whitlock
Wilson, who debuted alongside Whitlock at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, said he was not surprised by the comeback. 'I remember telling people at Paris 2024 that he wouldn't be done. Max is the greatest British gymnast ever, and he still has it in him at 33. I understand why he returned—it's the best job in the world. He will be challenging on pommel horse; he's the GOAT there.'
Wilson's Own Journey
Wilson retired in early 2021 due to health issues but cherishes his Commonwealth Games memories. He won five gold medals in the event, which kickstarted his career. Reflecting on Glasgow 2014, he said: 'I felt sick before my floor routine, but I nailed it and realised I belonged there. It was a career-changing moment.'
Inspiring the Next Generation
Wilson, now a content creator with millions of followers on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, continues to promote gymnastics. He participated in the King's Baton Relay at his Leeds academy, aiming to inspire young athletes. 'My goal is to get children into the sport that changed my life. That feeling is as good as winning a medal,' he said.
Team England's official automotive partner Geely is supporting the King's Baton Relay from May 26-31. For more information, visit Team England's website.
