Rio Ngumoha edges closer to new Liverpool payment after England debut
Ngumoha closer to Liverpool payment after England debut

Rio Ngumoha moved a step closer to unlocking a new payment from Liverpool to Chelsea after making his competitive England debut on Tuesday. The 18-year-old came off the bench in the 71st minute as the Three Lions beat Czechia 2-0 in the Nations League.

It was his second senior appearance for Thomas Tuchel's side, but his first in a competitive fixture, having previously played against New Zealand in a World Cup warm-up in June. According to The Daily Mail, Chelsea are due a further payment once Ngumoha reaches the required number of first-team appearances for England.

£6.8m package details

Liverpool paid an initial £2.8m for Ngumoha last year after the teenager joined from Chelsea. The total package could rise up to £6.8m through additional clauses, which include appearances for England and achievements at club level with Liverpool, both individually and as a team.

Although the Reds may have to pay a small fee to Chelsea, it will do little to damage the satisfaction they have got from securing one of the most talented young players in world football, with their move already paying off.

Breakthrough at Liverpool

Ngumoha has had quite the rise since moving to Liverpool two years ago. He made his professional debut in an FA Cup tie against Accrington Stanley in January 2025, becoming the club's youngest-ever starter in the process. That proved to be his only first-team appearance that season, as he had to wait until the start of the 2025/26 campaign to make his mark under Arne Slot.

He came off the bench to score a dramatic stoppage-time winner during a 3-2 win at Newcastle United in August 2025. It kickstarted a fruitful breakthrough season, with Ngumoha making 29 appearances in total during 2025/26, including 19 in the Premier League. He scored his first top-flight goal in a 2-0 win against Fulham in April 2026 and helped the Reds earn Champions League qualification.

Current season and contract talks

This season, Ngumoha has already clocked 232 minutes in five matches for the Reds and is an important member of Andoni Iraola's senior squad at Anfield. As a reward, it is thought that Ngumoha is in talks about a new, bumper long-term contract, having signed his first professional deal 12 months ago.
