Newcastle United have completed the club-record signing of Joelinton from Hoffenheim, with the 22-year-old forward penning a six-year deal and inheriting the iconic number nine shirt. The Brazilian becomes the fifth player from his country to represent the Magpies, following a mixed history of South American talent on Tyneside.
Kenedy, who joined on loan from Chelsea in January 2018, initially dazzled at St James' Park, helping Newcastle climb the table. However, his second loan spell was less successful, marred by off-field issues and a crucial penalty miss, leading to a return to Chelsea without starting a game in 2019.
Cacapa arrived in 2007 with a stellar reputation from Lyon, where he captained the side to five consecutive Ligue 1 titles. However, his Newcastle stint was plagued by inconsistency and injury, and he left after the club's relegation in 2009.
Fumaca had a forgettable loan spell in 1999, making only five league appearances as Newcastle avoided triggering a permanent transfer. He later played in the Czech Republic and German lower leagues.
Mirandinha, the first Brazilian to play in England, remains the most successful. He scored 24 goals in 67 games between 1987 and 1989, including a brace against Manchester United, and is still remembered by the famous chant: 'We've got Mirandinha, he's not from Argentina, he's from Brazil, he's ******* brill.'
