Newcastle United fell to a 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa at St James' Park, extending an unwanted club record. The Magpies have now failed to keep a clean sheet at home in each of their last 16 games in all competitions, the longest such run in their history. The previous worst run came between December 1998 and September 1999.
Barnes fury after missed chance
Late in the match, with the clock past the 85th minute, Yoane Wissa was slipped in on goal in front of the Gallowgate End. As he weighed up his options and fired an effort wide, Harvey Barnes was visibly furious, with his screams audible to fans behind the goal. Former England international Stephen Warnock, speaking to BBC Sport, said: "Harvey Barnes is going ballistic. He wants a slide ball to him. But credit to Pau Torres, he just holds his line and forces the move. I can see why Barnes is complaining there."
It had been a frustrating evening for Barnes, who struggled to get a clear sight of goal and failed to threaten Villa. He was not alone, as Newcastle struggled across all departments in the match.
Jaissle accepts boos and demands improvement
There were boos at half-time and full-time, something unthinkable only a few weeks ago. Head coach Matthias Jaissle acknowledged the negative reaction after the defeat, saying: "For sure, they wished for another result. That's their right. They all come here to celebrate three points. We couldn't deliver that today."
Jaissle felt his team gave a partial response following the 4-1 loss at Coventry on Monday. He said: "It was a game where we were dominating. Overall, I thought I was seeing a team giving a response. We had many situations where you saw that we were going to win that game and then we conceded a goal. We also need to be honest. We were shaky until half-time but then after that we showed a good response after half time."
He added: "The second 45 minutes were again really aggressive. We won the important duels. Unfortunately, we were just not smart enough in our decision-making in the final third, so that is something we need to improve. There were many occasions where we didn't find the right pass. Sometimes, it's not the right timing. These things need to be combined pretty soon to be more efficient."
Unwanted record and lack of threat
Having leaked four goals at Coventry on Monday night, the Magpies had been told to keep it "clean" in both boxes. They failed on both counts as Johan Manzambi was allowed to head home freely and Newcastle failed to have a shot in the penalty area. To cap it all off, United landed the unwanted record as they spluttered to defeat.
