Newcastle United slumped to a 4-1 defeat at Bristol City's Ashton Gate, with the Championship side leading 2-0 at half-time. Sam Greenwood's free-kick off the bar and a goal from Lorent Tolaj, who easily brushed off Sven Botman, put the Magpies behind.

Bristol City made it 3-0 on 50 minutes when Jason Knight found Max Bird, who was allowed time and space to prod past half-time substitute Nick Pope. Harvey Barnes pulled one back after Matheos Ferreira set up Jacob Ramsey, but Sam Bell's cross was met by a half-hearted clearance from Botman, who sliced past his own keeper for an own goal.

Anthony Elanga 6 – Started well but fizzled out; created some danger but is getting back into the swing.
Sean Neave 7 – Saw a first-half effort saved and hit the bar after the break; always creating.
Harvey Barnes 6 – Had a blocked shot and showed fight with a late strike.
