Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has warned that the club could face a 'reality check' in the new season, despite the club working to add new faces to the squad. The Magpies have seen significant changes over the summer, with Eddie Howe leaving and being replaced by Matthias Jaissle. Key players Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimaraes have all departed, joining Barcelona, Tottenham, and Arsenal respectively.
Transfer plans and targets
Newcastle are expected to reinvest some of the money from those sales, with midfield a priority to replace Tonali and Guimaraes. The club are reportedly interested in Marseille's Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Bayern Munich's Joao Palhinha, who was on loan at Tottenham last season. Additionally, they are looking to add a full-back and a winger, with business potentially extending to deadline day.
Shearer's warning
While acknowledging that potential incomings could boost the club, Shearer predicted a difficult season, citing a 'reality check' after recent successes including a Carabao Cup victory and Champions League football. Speaking to Betfair, he said: "I think there'll be different views of where Newcastle can finish this season. And I do think it's really important that they have a really good end to the transfer window because yes, they've spent some of the money that's come in for players that have left, but not all of it."
He added: "But I think with the signings that they've made and the signings hopefully they will make in the next two or three weeks, then it gives the fans a bit of energy, a bit of hope, that they can then compete again. Because they had gone a bit stale last season, certainly in the second half of the season, they had gone stale. There's no doubt about that."
Shearer also commented on the reasons for the slump: "Now people will have their own ideas as to why that is. People will want to blame Eddie. Some will. Some will want to blame the players; some will want to blame the situation that maybe there is at the top of the club. Now I happen to think it's a combination of all of them because of where Newcastle are. We've definitely punched above our weight in recent years and we've had a taste of success. And of course, once you've had a taste of it, you want more."
He concluded: "But I think we all might have to take a bit of a reality check this season. And I still think, and I might be in the minority, I don't know. But as we sit here with what we've got into the season and who we've sold and who we've lost, I think it could be a challenging season."
