Newcastle player ratings after Carabao Cup exit at Everton

Newcastle United were eliminated from the Carabao Cup after a 3-1 defeat at Everton, a result that raised fresh questions for head coach Matthias Jaissle. Two goals in the final 11 minutes of the first half left the Magpies with a mountain to climb before a third after the break sealed their fate.

Costly Errors Prove Decisive

Newcastle had made a steady start and tested Jordan Pickford a couple of times, but the tie turned when Amar Dedic lost the ball after hesitating in the corner. Tyrique George found Hayden Hackney, and James Garner swung home the opener with a curling effort.

It was 2-0 on the stroke of half-time after Newcastle felt they should have had a penalty when Harvey Barnes was upended in the box. Instead, referee Farai Hallam played on, Everton broke, and Thierno Barry crossed into an understaffed defence before Hackney applied the finish.

Magpies Player Ratings

Lukas Hornicek 6 - Another tough night but is always going to struggle when left exposed time after time.

Amar Dedic 4 - His performance plummeted here after a superb showing at Palace. Caught napping when trying to stand up George in the corner, an error that led to the opener. Rallied slightly after the break but this proved to be a poor show as Dewsbury-Hall tore past him for the third.

Fabian Schar 5 - His recall had steadied the nerves for supporters but could do little to stop Everton here. Jaissle's hesitancy to change his two centre-backs seems clearer here but his selection against Everton on Monday will be interesting.

Dan Burn 6 - Still getting back to full fitness and started well before being affected by the struggle of the team overall. Headed home a consolation to add some slight respectability to the scoreline.

Lewis Hall 4 - Way below his usual standard as one of the usual go-to men slumped on Merseyside.

Nico Gonzalez 4 - A decent start evaporated and it was no surprise to see his number come up. Steur was roared on as he replaced him.

Jacob Ramsey 4 - Looked off the pace as he lacked impact after being given a chance to impress. Didn't play to the whistle after taking down Garner causing chaos for the second goal. But the worst aspect was showing no awareness to allow Hackney to nip in and apply the finish. Hooked at half-time.

Jacob Murphy 3 - This was another struggle just days after a decent show at Palace. Managed one cross all night.

Joe Willock 5 - Not a great night but at least weighed in with an assist for Burn's late goal. Has so much talent but did not bring it to the table here.

Harvey Barnes 6 - Probably Newcastle's most dangerous player in truth. Had his chances and felt he should have had a penalty. Taken off at half-time to make way for Anthony Elanga.

William Osula 4 - A baffling performance on the back of his goal at Crystal Palace. Did not look at it at all, just seven touches and barely threatened.

Substitutes and Late Consolation

Joelinton 6 (For Ramsey 46), Anthony Elanga 6 (For Barnes 46), Yoane Wissa 4 (For Osula 46), Bazoumana Toure 6 (For Murphy 67), Sean Steur N/A - Was cheered loudly when he came on but those were ironic cheers from fans who think he should be playing (For Gonzalez 82).

Garner won the ball in midfield to find Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall on the left before he found Thierno Barry who had time to slot home. Willock crossed for Dan Burn to head home in stoppage time but it was too little too late.
